You know what they say, good people don’t leave bad organizations, they leave bad bosses. So if you notice that employees are unhappy, morale and productivity are low, absenteeism is high (someone is absent almost everyday) and employee retention is a lunchroom joke maybe it’s time to evaluate your supervisors/managers. ‘Badbossology’ could very well be a part of your corporate culture!
Now I am pretty confident that no supervisor/manager is going to admit (at least not publicly) that he/she is a bad boss, but just ask employees and you will have enough horror stories to write a book.
Are you a bad boss? To Thine Own Self Be True! Obviously the more you answer yes the greater the likelihood that you are a bad boss.
1. You talk about employees (with line staff) behind their backs.
2. You criticize staff in front of others.
3. You yell at staff publicly and privately.
4. You withhold information that staff needs to do their job.
5. You’ve taken credit for other people’s work.
6. The majority of the staff don’t like or fear you.
7. You are a jellyback who caves under pressure and leaves your team to the ‘firing squad” to save your own skin.
8. You believe that a 40 hour work week is a cardinal sin so you make your staff work late at least three days out of the week.
9. You are a control freak, you micro-manage.
10. You fail to provide clear goals for your team.
11. You are a liar – your team does not trust you.
12. You assign too many task and attach impossible deadlines.
13. You never provide positive feedback, but you’re quick to point our flaws.
14. You take pleasure is saying ‘no’, just because you can.
15. You suffer from ‘professionally busy syndrome’ – (you are always to busy to talk or meet with staff)
16. You are an absentee manager
17. You feel threatened by a competent co-worker who receives praise from management so you secretly look for ways to derail him/her.
18. You inadequately compensate, (again just because you can - shame on you)
19. You don’t respect staff legal rights. – you invade staff privacy
20. You discriminate and harass staff
